Carlisle Countryside Volunteer Team

The Carlisle Countryside Volunteer Team are a group of enthusiastic volunteers who meet up every Monday to carry out practical conservation tasks in the countryside sites around the city of Carlisle.

The team plays an important role in the conservation of the city's countryside sites, carrying out tasks such as hay meadow management, coppicing, footpath management, pond management and boardwalk construction. It is a great chance get to meet new people, learn new skills and contribute towards the conservation of Carlisle's wildlife.

The group meets at 10am on site, and the day would normally finish at approximately 3pm. Each work day is based at different countryside sites around the city and Talkin Tarn. When working at Talkin Tarn transport to site is provided. All other volunteers sessions are based in and around Carlisle and all sites are within walking or cycling distance from the city centre and car parking is available. We will provide you with a clear map and directions which you can download from this page.

Carlisle City Council will provide you with all the tools and equipment you will need on the day and even teas and coffees! We just ask that you bring you own waterproof gear, steel toe cap boots or wellies a packed lunch and plenty of enthusiasm.

Please note that if you are attending as a referral through a mental health charity/organisation then there is a requirement to be accompanied by a key person/care worker for the duration of the session.

The work programme below will be regularly updated to let volunteers know what tasks they will be carrying out and when.

For health and safety reasons we ask that you register and fill in the following Volunteer Application Form before you take part. It is also possible to register on the task day.

To register as a volunteer, please download and fill in the form below, returning it to Cath.Gregory@carlisle.gov.uk or Kim.Fitzmaurice@carlisle.gov.uk

If you wish to take part in a work day we ask that you text, phone (07788588102) or e-mail (see above) before 8.30am on the task day to confirm your attendance, so that know that there are sufficient numbers of volunteers to carry out the task.

It is possible for reasons such as the bad weather or staff shortages, that some days might have to be cancelled at short notice. If this is the case then we will contact you via text message, phone or e-mail by 9 am on the morning of the task day.
